Dr Miles Bennell returns his small town practice to find several of his patients suffering the paranoid delusion that their friends or relatives are impostors. He is initially skeptical, especially when the alleged dopplegängers are able to answer detailed questions about their victim’s lives, but he is eventually persuaded that something odd has happened and determines to find out what is causing this phenomenon. This film can be seen as a paranoid 1950s warning against those Damn Commies or, conversely, as a metaphor for the tyranny of McCarthyism (or the totalitarian system of Your Choice) and has a pro- and epilogue that was forced upon Siegel by the studio to lighten the tone.

Film Review

A derivative story to Robert Heinlein's "Puppet Master" except that how the alien takes control is not obvious. Is the whole body just replicated, or does it get taken over mentally ? It's not clear from the movie.Dr Benett (Kevin McCrthy) is a small town doctor. One day when he goes out for a drive with his girlfriend Becky (Dana Wynter), a boy comes running out on the street almost getting runned over by his car. Later, the boy's grand mother brings the boy to his office claiming that the boy is upset over something. The boy is claiming that his mother is not his mother anymore. Thinking that the boy has over active imagination, Benett sends the boy to his grand mother's house for the night. Later that evening his friend finds a strange "replica" of a body and asks him to come and take a look. At inspection, the replica seems to be some sort of unfinished version of an actual person. Then they notice that more of them are growing in the greenh…

It's taken me way too long to get around to this film but I'm glad to have made the effort. The picture serves as a direct counterpoint to 1951's "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in which humanity had a decision to make and it wouldn't have been too late to set the world on a more peaceful course. Here, the humans don't have a chance, eventually everyone would fall victim to the body snatchers emanating from their birthing pods.In the Kevin McCarthy interview that accompanies the Artisan DVD release, he seems to dismiss the idea that the movie was a commentary on Communist paranoia or making some related political statement. Funny, but that's exactly the idea that came to my mind while watching the film, ie, how easy it is for a society to become brainlessly influenced when critical thinking goes out the window. Replacing thought and emotions with a doctrinaire acceptance of a universal mindset has always been the statist's goal, and never h…
